This is a chance...

It goes without saying that I'm elated right now. After 8 years under the worst president in American history I feel like we've finally started a new chapter. Not only did we witness history tonight but we've been presented with a chance.

We have a chance to repair the damage to America's reputation done by the Bush administration. We have a chance to show the rest of the world we can live up to our own ideals. We have a chance to lead by example rather than by intimidation. We have a chance to change for the better.

For much of my adult life I've been embarrassed for my country. I've doubted the ability of the American public to act on anything other than it's own self interest. I've been enraged by the language of empire the current presidency used to justify war. But tonight I'm optimistic. Tonight I'm proud of the choice we made.

God, if Obama can coax optimism out of you...

The 'chance' thing is indeed what this feels like. I think we as Americans had something like a chance after 9/11, and went in generally disastrous directions. Now we (as democrats, liberals, socialists, pinkos, the naively optimistic, whatever) have a chance, or something like it.

In America things will always happen primarily at the grassroots, but here's to hoping that for a few years, on a few issues, Leviathan can throw some fertilizer on the world's 'grass' rather than dousing it in oil and tossing on a match.
